Deadly snakes for sale on M62

UNDERCOVER investigators have a exposed a deadly trade in venomous snakes in West Yorkshire.

Vet Emma Milne, working with former RSPCA special investigations officer Terry Spammer, secretly filmed a man selling a deadly African puff adder at the Hartshead Moor services on the M62.

Emma and a team from the BBC's Inside Out programme also exposed a loophole in the current law which allows people to buy venomous snakes, including cobras, in Europe and bring them back to the UK.

Emma said: "There is plenty of evidence to suggest that there are lots of people who are not bothering with a licence – and this is what is fuelling the black market in illegally-held snakes."

The team secretly filmed a man who called himself John selling them a puff adder at the Hartshead Moor services on the M62. He handed over the deadly snake in a holdall for 150 and boasted that he could get hold of other venomous reptiles.

An Egyptian Cobra was also bought at a snake fair in Holland and brought back into the UK completely legally thro-ugh customs at Hull. Both snakes are now being looked after by a registered keeper in the UK.

Inside Out is on BBC1 tonight at 7.30pm.
