A local entrepreneur has invested £60,000 in Halifax RLFC.
Tony Abbott invested in the shares at the club, through his company Reactiv Media, making it the largest single shareholder.
He has been involved with the club for the last four years and is already a director while Reactiv Media is the club’s main sponsor.
“I am determined to see Halifax RLFC back where we know they belong, in Super League. The club has a long and proud history in the RFL and this last four years whilst I have been involved has been especially successful.” said Mr Abbott.
“I think that we have applied all the good business techniques that have helped me in my business career, we want to break even or make a profit, which we have for the last three years, we will take proper business decisions about monies we spend or don’t spend and overall we try to run our rugby club in a proper business-like manner”
The shares are newly-issued so the investment represents a fresh cash injection to the club’s finances.
Club chairman Michael Steele said: “Tony has made a major contribution to the club in the last four years and we are delighted to have his support and contribution.
“Whilst we have a robust business consistently generating modest profits in difficult circumstances working capital is always an issue and this investment will be a significant boost to the club.”
Mr Abbott now owns 30 per cent of shares in the club with the next largest shareholders being Mr Steele and former club chairman Howard Posner who own 21 per cent each.
Director Ian Croad said the investment is vital for the club and will benefit its chances of returning to the Super League,
Ian Croad Halifax Football Director said “ Tony has been a breath of fresh air ever since he joined the Club. He’s brought all those business ideas that have helped make him so successful into the Club and as a result we are, I believe, a much more robust organisation, This investment to help make us ready for Super League is just the shot in the arm both the Club and the town need. We were disappointed to be turned down by the RFL eighteen months ago but we have taken on board their comments and are determined to show the RFL and indeed the Super League that Halifax RLF are a force to be reckoned with”
Reactiv Media began life in May 2007 on the outskirts of Halifax and now has offices in Elland, Nottingham and London.
“I really am determined that I can put something back into the town that has helped me become successful,” said Mr Abbott.
