Fifty years of honouring our volunteers

50 years of Brooksby award in Haifax. Pictured is most recent winner Richard Turner, with trustees, Leslie Smith, Alex Gledhill and Dorian Brooksby.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of a prestigious award established to recognise those who volunteer to help young people in Calderdale.

The Harold Brooksby Memorial Award was set up after Mr Brooksby’s tragic death in 1962.

He was killed in an accident at work in Hipperholme but he had given years of service to Ovenden Youth club as well as other youth work locally.

The award is presented annually to a person or group who has given lengthy voluntary service to help local youngsters.

This year will be the 50th award and trustees are looking for as many nominations as possible for those worthy of receiving the honour.

Treasurer Leslie Smith, who has been involved with the trust for more than 20 years, said: “We all enjoy doing this every year.

“It’s quite a prestigious award.

“When you look at the people who have received it - it’s been awarded to people who have just given up their time free of charge for years and years just to help people.”

People can visit www.brooksbymemorialaward.co.uk to make a nomination or write to The Secretary to the Trustees, The Harold Brooksby Memorial Award, 20, Lynton Grove, Bradshaw, Halifax HX2 9XN by February 2013.
