The funeral for a remarkable woman from Southowram who gave decades of service to the Royal British Legion takes place on Wednesday.
Betsy Burton-Chambers , who was 92, joined the association in 1970 and was chairman of the Halifax Central branch from the 1980s.
She was born and grew up in Southowram and, at the age of 21, she volunteered with the Auxiliary Territorial Service.
She was based at camps on the Norfolk coast, Guildford in Surrey and Port Sunlight on the Wirrall before rerunging to Calderdale, attached to No 2 and No 3 Holding Battalion, Royal Engineers.
She was de-mobbed in February 1946 and met and married John who had served with the Royal Engineers.
The couple had nine children - five girls and four boys - and 13 grand-children and four great-grand-children.
Her family said she was well known in Southowram.
They added: “She was a great life-loving person and a rock for every one of us.
“She loved to travel and had eben to South Lorea, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.”
The funeral for MrsBurton-Chambers takes place at Halifax Minster at 11am on Wednesday.
