Gas leak from roadworks on Turner Avenue North, Illingworth, Halifax

Residents who were evacuated from their homes after a major gas leak in Illingworth were returned to their homes safely.

Homes in and surrounding Turner Avenue North were affected after a gas pipe was damaged, yesterday afternoon (March 3).

The gas leak caused Turner Avenue North to be temporarily closed at one end.

Northern Gas Network engineers worked to repair the leak on the gas pipe.

As a precaution, 15 properties in the immediate were evacuated.

Today, (March 4) a spokesperson for Northern Gas Networks said: “Our engineers successfully carrier out temporary repair work on a gas pipe in Turner Avenue North, yesterday.

“The 15 customers affected were allowed to return to their homes yesterday evening and Turner Avenue North was reopened.

“Engineers are working in the area again today, carrying out permanent repair work on the damaged pipe.

“Our apologies for any inconvenience. We never take chances with public safety.”
