Plans to demolish a row of empty shops in Halifax town centre are facing opposition.
The owner wants to put a car park on the site of the low level buildings between 21 and 35 Broad Street.
But Calderdale Council planning officers say that would be unwise as the land is designed for retail development and its change of use would fail to enhance or preserve the character and appearance of the town centre Conservation Area.
They have recommended that the planning committee rejects the application by Mr B. Holmes when it meets on January 8.
“The site is located within a tertiary shopping frontage in the unitary development plan and the proposed use would lead to the fragmentation of this.
“In the absence of an acceptable scheme for redeveloping the site, the demolition would result in an unsightly, undeveloped site which would fail to preserve or enhance the character and appearance of the Conservation Area.”
But Coun Bob Metcalfe (Lab, Town) said he supported the scheme following a briefing from the applicant.
“The application will visually improve the street scene on Broad Street,” he said in a report to the planning committee.
The row of properties includes a former nightclub and shops which have been empty for years and which the owner has been unable to rent out. He says that the whole row which was built in the late 1960s needs massive investment to make it attractive.
Walker Singleton (Property Management Ltd) says a car park would benefit the adjoining Crown House office block.
