Halifax MP Linda Riordan has joined the fight to save Pellon Network Centre which is facing closure by Calderdale Council.
In December 2013 the Courier reported how Lib Dem Warley ward councillors James Baker and Ashley Evans had started a campaign to save the facility.
Mrs Riordan recently paid a visit to the centre, on Rye Lane, Pellon, with Warley’s Labour councillor Martin Burton.
The centre is at the heart of the area and is well liked and used by hundreds of people in the local community.
Mrs Riordan said: “It is essential that a rescue plan is urgently put together to help save the centre.
“It is well run, well liked and well used so hopefully common sense can prevail and the centre’s long term future secured.”
Councillor Burton said: “If the centre closed it would be devastating for the community and the many groups who use the centre.
“It is a vibrant hub that brings people together and enriches community life. I am confident a rescue package will be found.
“The campaign will continue until the centre’s future is secured. Local people deserve nothing less.”
The centre underwent a major refurbishment in 2008 but closure was put forward as part of consultation that concluded on December 30.
Councillor James Baker said: “Closing this centre would be a scandalous abandonment of one of the most economically deprived areas in the borough.”
