Our proud golden girl Hannah Cockroft missed out on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award tonight.(Sun)

Millions of TV viewers tuned in to see the show broadcast from the First Direct Arena, Leeds.

It was won by Andy Murrary with Lee Halfpenny runner-up and Tony MCcoy third.

Hannah was nominated after following up her double Paralympic gold medal performances last year with success at the IPC Athletics World Championship in Lyon where she retained both her world titles.

Hannah was up against a star-studded line-up.

She was competing against Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, US Open winner Justin Rose, Tour de France title-holder Chris Froome, jockey Tony McCoy. sailor Ben Ainslie, cricketer Ian Bell, rugby player Leigh Halfpenny and athletes Mo Farah and Christine Ohuruogu.

Hannah was thrilled to be in contention and told the audience that training on the hills around her Halifax home helped to keep ahead of the field.

Hannah, who has amazed many with her wheelchair racing exploits, was awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours List and was recently nominated for the Disability Sportswoman of the Year at the 2013 Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswoman of the Year Award.

It was the 60th BBC Sports Personality awards and decided by public votes.
