In Bloom brightens and brings together whole communities

An essential part of the Calderdale summer and Yorkshire are the hanging baskets of colourful flowers that line the streets of the surrounding communities for the annual Halifax in Bloom.

Peter Oddy, chairman of Halifax in Bloom and a Yorkshire in Bloom judge, spoke to the Courier about what God’s Own County means to him.

The annual Yorkshire in Bloom event is held all over Yorkshire and is a chance for communities to work together to show off the best of their towns.

“In Bloom is a big part of my life,” said Peter, who has been a Yorkshire in Bloom judge for around 15 years and the chair of Halifax in Bloom for five years.

“There are so many communities in Yorkshire that excel in what they do and they have so much passion about their villages.”

Although Halifax in Bloom has no set theme, Peter tries to keep the displays vibrant so they ‘stand out’ on the streets.

With Yorkshire Day celebrations in full swing, Peter displays some rare white roses in the demonstration garden in Manor Heath Park - the floral symbol of Yorkshire.

“Yorkshire is such a fantastic county.

“It has got such diverse communities and Calderdale holds a special part in my heart,” Peter said.
