A man who was once one of Calderdale’s most prolific offenders has been shortlisted for a national award which celebrates inspirational individuals and groups across the country.
Ben Ashcroft, from Sowerby Bridge, has been nominated in the Positive Role Model category of the National Diversity Awards.
Ben, who battled self-harm and heroine abuse documented the moving story of how he turned his life around in his book, 51 moves, which charted how he was moved a staggering 51 times to 37 different children’s homes and young offenders’ institutions.
Recently, Ben has stood at the forefront of the campaign to raise the care age for all children in care.
Along with the team at Every Child Leaving Care Matters, Ben began an online petition campaigning for equality of support to be raised to 21 - for all looked after children.
The petition received huge support and was signed by prolific figures and charities.
The ceremony takes place in London on Friday September 26 and will recognise all aspects of diversity within one celebration.
