A 79-year-old keen walker is once again preparing for a mammoth walk in Spain to continue his fund-raising quest for Overgate Hospice.
Jerome Sullivan will walk 70 miles from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela in western Spain.
This will be his 12th long walk for Overgate Hospice and more modest than last year’s 325 mile walk across Spain.
He said: “It’s a shorter distance by a long way. I don’t want to let anyone down in any way. I will be 80 this May.”
Mr Sullivan lives in Huddersfield, but lived in Halifax until his retirement, and walks into Elland every day. He has put collection boxes in pubs and clubs around Brighouse and Elland to collect donations for his walk, which he starts this weekend. Mr Sullivan said the hospice does such a “tremendous job” and has been touched by people’s support. On a previous walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats, he collected over £100 from passers-by.
He said: “It brings tears to your eyes - the generosity of people is enourmous. If I can do something, well I will do it. Even if all the posters I have put out only raise £5 between them, it doesn’t matter. It goes to Overgate Hospice and that’s it.”
