Recovery work is now underway after a four-vehicle collision closed the M62 in West Yorkshire.
A fuel spillage contributed to the problems on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 30 and 31.
Congestion was reported as far back as the junction with the M1 at Lofthouse.
The crash, involving two HGVs, a van and a car, closed both carriageways through the morning rush hour. Police said injuries were “non life threatening”.
The eastbound lanes will remain closed until all four vehicles have been recovered, police said.
The Highway Agency is expecting the road to re-open from 10am.
