Q - Which former World Cup winning rugby player hosted the pub quiz at the Standard of Freedom pub in Skircoat Green this week?
A - Matt Dawson.
The Question of Sport star was asking the questions instead of answering them after Helen Byrnes, from Skircoat Green, won a competition to design a new sausage.
Helen, cafe manager at Sainsbury’s in Halifax, saw off more than 50 other entries with her Meditaerranean bangers and won the prize of a pub quiz at her local, hosted by Matt Dawson
She said: “I thought I had a really good recipe and I like to enter competitions so I thought ‘why not?’ but I didn’t expect to win.
“I’d forgotten I’d entered and went into work saying ‘look what I’ve won!’ and cooked them for my tea that night.
“I’m a huge Question of Sport fan so it was really exciting to have Matt here and he signed my copy of his autobiography too.”
Dawson was part of the triumphant World Cup winning England side in 2003 and now regularly hosts cooking shows on television.
He said: “I’ve never been to Halifax before so I Tweeted about it and Brian Moore, the former England rugby player, Tweeted back saying ‘I’m from Halifax, say no more’. My old team-mate Charlie Hodgson also Tweeted glowing in his praise about Halifax.
“Obviously the Six Nations starts soon, which I always look forward to working on.
“We’re filming Question of Sport again next month and we just filmed our 1,000th show, which I was very proud to be involved in because it’s such a big landmark.”
