Two vehicles, one carrying 20 budgies and four parakeets, crashed on the M62.
A Citroen Picasso carrying the birds and a Peugeot collided on the westbound carriageway between Junction 25 at Brighouse and Ainley Top.
Brighouse fire crews were called to the incident at 8.50pm last night.
As paramedics checked the drivers, the owner of the birds had to call a friend to help transport the budgies back home.
No-one was seriously injured in the accident.
