MP CRAIG Whittaker’s son is thought to be leaving the country for good following his father’s arrest on suspicion of assaulting him.

The Courier understands Lee Whittaker, 24, is emigrating to Australia in the next few weeks

His dad, the Tory MP for Calder Valley, was questioned by police investigating an allegation of an attack on the 24-year-old at the Co-op petrol station in Mytholmroyd on Boxing Day night.

Mr Whittaker, 49, is currently on bail pending further police inquiries.

Lee, who studied forensic science and digital media at Manchester Metropolitan University, is thought to be planning a career in digital media in Australia.

It is believed he will be initially staying with friends in Sydney. Craig Whittaker, who emigrated to Australia with his parents when he was five and returned to England in 1984, told the Courier earlier this week that he would be carrying out his Parliamentary duties as usual, despite the arrest.

He said the police had made him aware of allegations and he had a full statement to them.

In light of the police investigation, there was nothing else he could say.

A spokesman for the Conservative Party said it would be inappropriate for them to comment because of the ongoing police investigation.

Craig Whittaker, who became MP for the Calder Valley in 2010, lives in Fixby and has three children and two stepchildren.

He married for the second time last year and Lee was an usher at the wedding.

MP’s son planned to leave UK before alleged attack

The Courier reported on February 4 that Lee Whittaker was planning to emigrate to Australia.

This followed a report of the arrest of his father, Calder Valley MP Craig Whittaker, on Boxing Day, on suspicion of assaulting his son.

We have been asked to point out Lee Whittaker was planning to emigrate before the alleged attack and not as a result of it.

We apologise if any reader assumed the two matters were connected and are happy to set the record straight.
