Stand-by crews attended two incidents during today’s (Fri) strike by firefighters from 6.30 am to 8.30 am.

A person was released from a lift in an apartment block at Back Station Road, Mirfield, at 6.30 am.

And, a small amount of rubber matting was on fire in a play area at Hawksworth, Leeds, at 6.45 am.

It was the ninth strike taken by members of the Fire Brigades Union in a dispute over pensions.

Chief Fire Officer Simon Pilling said: “We have thankfully experienced a quiet couple of hours.”

Under contingency plans 29 fire engines covered the county compared to the normal fleet of 54.
