Pupils are packing a punch at Halifax High during free boxing sessions provided by the school.
The Star Boxing Club, Ovenden, have made Halifax High School a satellite of their own club and are provide training to boys and girls from the school, as well as the wider community.
Keith Hutson, Vice Chair of Governors at the school, said: “The school is to be developed into Calderdale’s first ‘through school’ for pupils aged 4-16.
“This development gives us the opportunity to make the school into a real community hub, providing a variety of clubs and services for the whole area and the boxing club is one of the first steps.
“It’s proving to be a great success. The boxing talent at Halifax High is incredible and, as an ex-boxer, I predict the school will produce a national champion in the next five years.
“We’re getting between 25 and 30 pupils at the sessions so it’s really taken off.
“It’s a great opportunity to give them something that perhaps isn’t available in other schools.
“It teaches them discipline, self-esteem and harnesses the energetic behaviour into a positive channel.”
Sessions take place every Tuesday between 3.30pm and 4.30pm. Anyone interested in joining can call 368524 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
