A charity boxing match is being held in memory of a local rugby player and father who lost his life to cancer.

On Friday April 25, hundreds are expected to come together for a boxing event in aid of Overgate Hospice and in memory of former Siddal and Park Amateurs player Martin Lewis, who lost his life to liver cancer at the hospice in October last year.

Mr Lewis, the late husband of Rachel and father to Ethan Jessica and the late Harper, was a supporter and fan of Ovenden’s Halifax ABC Boxing Club.

Head coach Mick Rowe said: “Martin and his family regularly attended and supported the club even when his illness got serious. We were good friends and it feels right to organise our charity event in honour of him.”

Because of Mr Lewis’ fundraising efforts for Overgate hospice, before he passed away, the coach said all proceeds will go to the Elland hospice. He said: “We hope it will be a fantastic show.”

Helping organise the event for an audience of 600, is committee member and Lloyds connector for business in the community Gavin Morton. He said: “It’s been a lot of planning for the event which is in the heart of North Halifax - we hope its’ a sell-out and everyone has fun on the night.”

If Friday’s event is successful, it is hoped the charity match in memory of Martin Lewis could become an annual event.

Standard, £10, and ringside, £15, tickets are still available. Call 07870 266 002.
