A Halifax artist will bring a touch of Parisian culture to West Vale this weekend with a canvas of the Champs Elysee.

Samantha Standring-Brown, who has exhibited work in Spain and France, will display the painting in West Vale on Sunday - the day the Grand Depart cycles through Calderdale.

The stretched canvas measures 40 inches by 50 inches and was painted using water-based acrylic paint.

Prints of the canvas will be on sale at Co-op stores in West Vale, Ripponden and Elland which will help raise money for Overgate Hospice.

Samanatha, from West Vale, said: “It was inspired by a poster I saw from 1912 and a modern photo of the race going down the Champs Elysee.

“The backs of the riders are all advertising local shops - I tried to fit in as many as I possibly could!

“It’s part of a series of 12 paintings called Bubbles in Time of famous French impressionist paintings with the characters replaced with local people.

“The canvas took two-and-a-half weeks to do. I couldn’t think of a more opportune moment to get out there and do this.”
