The chairman of a local football team says it “beggars belief” they were issued with a court summons from Calderdale Council after failing to pay their pitch fees.

Calder 76, who play in the Halifax Premier League, were late paying their pitch hire twice last year, incurring charges of £445.

Chairman John Jones says was upset by the council’s response, and that the first the club knew about it was when their secretary received a personal County Court Judgement.

He said: “The council haven’t made any more money by threatening us in this way.

“It’s just given a solicitor and the court an extra £50 each.

“We are all either rate payers and children of rate payers at the club.

“It just beggars belief - I still can’t get my head around it.

“I’m really, really disappointed by the whole thing.

“We’ve got it paid off now because they wouldn’t let us play on any council pitch home or away until we did.

“We are a non-profit making sports club taking 35 lads off the street.

“Technically we did breach the terms of the agreement but it just seems completely over the top.”

Calderdale Council’s Director of Communities and Business Change, Robin Tuddenham, said: “Calderdale Council take the non-payment of fees seriously, and will seek to recover costs as quickly as possible.

“The Calder 76 team were late paying their fees on two occasions, and the club was unable to pay the full amount invoiced. As such, a payment agreement was set up, but unfortunately the club did not adhere to the agreement and reminders were sent out.

“On 5 March, a claim was issued with the courts for non-payment, including court costs. This figure was paid in full on 13 March. There is no CCJ against the club as the payment was received within the required time.”
