Rishworth School has unveiled a special welcome message for the Tour de France with a giant yellow bike.
The cycle bears the slogan Rishworth Welcomes le Tour de France, with pupils at Rishworth School and Heathfield, the Junior School, are preparing themselves for a celebration of sport as the world’s biggest cycle race comes through the area.
At Heathfield, children are taking a Bikeability course to enable them to enjoy mountain biking as part of the extra-curricular activities run at the school.
All Rishworth’s pupils will be involved with a gigantic human picture on the Rishworth Sports Day – an image which will only be appreciated from the sky.
In a series of themed lessons across different subject departments, lower school pupils will be taking part in activities as diverse as mapping the route taken by this year’s tour; compiling biographies of some of the riders; creating food products to be sold en route; researching and drawing bikes through the ages and graphing and analysing statistics for the race since it started over 100 years ago.
Anthony Wilkins, the head of Heathfield, said: “It is important for our school, with such a strong sporting tradition, to be seen to support this unique local event.
“Children will remember being a part of the excitement surrounding Le Tour for all their lives, and being a part of the event will help them to challenge themselves in the future.”
