Store staff fined for selling alcohol to teens in police test

STAFF from three off-licences have been fined for selling drink to under-18s.

Police teamed up with Calderdale Council staff to send two 15-year-old girls to buy cider from 12 shops in Halifax town centre and Sowerby Bridge.

They found three stores - all in Sowerby Bridge - sold alcohol to the under-age girls.

Inspector Derrick Oldham, said: "I am pleased the majority of off-licenses we visited refused to sell alcohol to the clearly underage girls.

"However, three stores failed the test purchase and the employees who sold the alcohol have each been given a fixed penalty notice and have received follow up visits by police.

"We will be carrying out further test purchase operations and those who failed this time can be guaranteed a re-visit."
