A woman who hasn’t ridden a bike in years will take to the saddle on a Far East charity expedition after dramatic weight loss has left her brimming with confidence.
Korena Hillier, of Rastrick, has gone from a dress size 22 down to a size 10/12 after hitting the gym hard and now she’s determined to keep the weight lbs off but gain the pounds for charity Women V Cancer in her mission to fundraise for a charity close to her heart.
Life begins at 40 and it certainly does for Korena who celebrates her 40th birthday in May.
“Life’s too short - I was determined to lose the weight so I could start doing things in my life with more passion and energy,” she said.
Going from 14 stone to nine stone 10 pounds has had massive health benefits for the 39-year-old who previously suffered with diabetes, asthma and aching joints.
Korena was diagnosed with type two diabetes in 2006, but introducing exercise and healthy eating into her lifestyle has meant she is now free of diabetes and has cut her daily medical prescription by nine tablets per day.
“I’ve been going to Halifax Pure Gym since April last year and the benefits are incredible. The support I have had from the gym members and instructors has been over-whelming - people have said that I have inspired them and that means so much to me.”
She will go on to inspire others in the Cylce China Women V Cancer sponsored 450km cycle in the Beijing province of China.
“I signed up to this without having ridden a bike for years - so I’ve been out and bought a bike. I had two introductory lessons as I was a bit wobbly at first - good job I’m not so much of a big bird anymore.”
Korena, who has never been to Asia, said she is most looking forward to seeing the Great Wall of China and different culture.
