Teachers strike hits Calderdale schools today

Flashback to a previous teachers' strike

Flashback to a previous teachers' strike

Teachers across Calderdale were staging a one day strike today as part of industrial action by NUT members.

The walk out is over increased workloads and bureaucracy, introduction of performance related pay and unfair pension changes.

NUT Divisional Secretary for Calderdale Sue McMahon said: “Striking is the last thing we want to do, but Michael Gove wants to rip the heart out of education and revert back to a time when young people did not have access to a broad and balanced curriculum.

“He is intent on imposing his blinkered view of education, which is for the few and not for the many.

“This strike is not about selfish teachers wanting to line their own pockets; it’s about standing up to the bullying secretary of state who allows unqualified people to teach and allows private companies to make a profit out of education.”

Teachers last walked out on October 1 last year causing chaos for schools and the NUT says that since then Mr Gove has refused to sit down and discuss the issues.
