A Brighouse man is running the Great North Run next month in support of his sister’s partner who is waiting for a heart transplant.
Calvin Lee, 23, of Hove Edge, is raising money for the Cardiomyopathy Association which supports families affected by the heart muscle disease cardiomyopathy.
The disease, which causes the heart to enlarge and pump less efficiently, is one of the main reasons people need heart transplants.
His sister’s partner, 44-year-old Darren Gibson, also of Brighouse, was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy in 2004.
In many patients the disease can be successfully treated with drugs and pacemakers, but in some the condition can worsen leaving a heart transplant as the best option.
Calvin hopes to raise £1,000 from the run on September 16 in Newcastle.
