Cash boost for new primary school building

Nearly £4 million will be invested by the council to provide a new building for pupils at a Todmorden primary school.

The current Ferney Lee Primary School site, Ferney Lee Road, is no longer fit for purpose and will be demolished once a new, modern site school been built.

Head teacher Helen Hannah said: “The proposed new-build is a fantastic opportunity for the whole community at Ferney Lee.

“Whilst the façade may look very grand and beautiful, the running costs significantly compromise the sustainability of our staff team impacting directly on outcomes for children.

“To be able to create an environment which complements our innovative curriculum, which includes both indoor and outdoor learning is tantalising to say the least. It is a great opportunity to build on the heritage of the school site, creating a fit-for-purpose design which will ensure that we can continue to achieve great things in the future.”

Councillor Megan Swift, Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for Children and Young People’s Services, added: “We want Calderdale students to have the best possible learning experience to help them reach their full potential.

“Ferney Lee Primary School is an old building which is no longer fit for purpose. Following a detailed feasibility study, a planning application has been submitted to build a new, modern facility on the Ferney Lee site, and upon completion, demolish the old school.

“This option is more financially viable than refurbishing the existing school, and ensures a more suitable environment for modern learning and a new single-storey building that is much more efficient and cheaper to run.”

Construction on the new school will begin next spring and work would last around one year. Pupils would stay in the existing building during construction work to minimise disruption.
