Calderdale’s Mayor Nader Fekri overcame his fear of heights when he conquered a Halifax climbing wall.

He paid a visit to Mixenden Activity Centre to experience some of the fun children and young people have there every week.

Coun Fekri said: “I’m not afraid of going up, it’s coming down. I’m afraid of landings.

“I was only about 20ft up, but it was quite scary - but I was in good hands.”

He also watched club members mountain biking, had a go at archery and sampled some cooking.

Coun Fekri said: “It was wonderful to see the youngsters trying their hands at all sorts of outdoor and indoor stuff, and being tutored by some of the older teenagers and some adult volunteers.

“It was a lovely cooperative and fun learning environment.”

The centre is run by Calderdale Council and its activity club runs every Tuesday from 5.30pm to 6.45pm for six to 12-year-olds, and from 7pm to 8.30pm for 12 to 19-year-olds.
