A team of Hipperholme students won a United Nations debating competition at their first attempt.

Six students from Hipperholme Grammar went to the debate at Bradford Grammar School.

In pairs, the pupils represented three delegations for UN member states and debated a new convention on the elimination of discrimination against women.

The winning pair of Lizzie Bell and Bobbie Hudson, from Year 12, received the award for best contribution.

The girls were commended for their excellent public-speaking ability and skill in keeping the debate moving, and received a shield and certificates.

Hanni Fisher, English and drama teacher at Hipperholme Grammar, said: “It was a wonderful afternoon of debating, which all the students involved thoroughly enjoyed.

“They are very much looking forward to being invited back next year to defend their title.”
