A Halifax charity has won £10,000 worth of outdoor decking after a convincing 250 word letter.
The Next Step Trust on King Cross Road, which provides care to young adults with physical and learning disabilities, won a competition run by Hopwood Lane firm Iplas, which produces recycled plastics for the construction industry.
Their written application, which outlined why the charity needed the support from Iplas, was chosen as the best from the six other charities on the short list.
As well as the decking, they won project management and installation expertise towards the building of it.
Helen Lane, centre manager, said: “The people we support often have very complex needs, many are wheelchair users and some suffer from autism. We aim to give them access to activities and opportunities that most young people take for granted.
“Our entry concentrated on our plan to redevelop the shrubbery outside our dining room into a decked area. This will be used for coffee times, outdoor dining, arts and crafts, music, gardening, general relaxation and socialising.”
She added that the trust has arranged level access to the site for wheelchair users from an existing ramp and walkway. It has also moved many of the shrubs, to provide an attractive surrounding for the re-developed area and help it blend into the location.
