Chess: Master class at North Bridge as Howell takes crown
A HUGE field of nearly 400 players ensured Halifax's hosting of the British Rapidplay Chess Championships at the weekend was a tremendous success.
And with the likes of Grandmasters David Howell, Mark Hebden, Stewart Haslinger and Keith Arkell at North Bridge Leisure Centre in a star studded entry, along with an encouragingly large number of youngsters, the Championships provided both players, spectators and controllers with some high quality chess.
And emerging talent Howell was clear winner in the Open, the tournament's major event, with a scorching 10.5 out of 11.
Though a draw against Arkell preventing him chalking up a maximum, he still racked up the highest score in the tournament's modern era, with Hebden and Fide Master Jonathan Hawkins sharing second place with 8.5 out of 11.
Other winners - Major Joint title: Guy Batchelor and Mark Talbot 8.5/11.
Intermediate Joint: Robert Hughes and Adrian Archer-Lock 9/11.
Minor: Andrew Hart 9/11
England Under 11 Trial: James Walsh, Anna Wang, Alexei Davis, Ravi Haria joint first on 5/6.
Under 16s: Francesca Fozard 3.5/5.
Under 14s: Alex Harris 4.5/5.
Under 12s: Joris Gerlagh 4.5/5.
Under 10s: Conor Murphy 4.5/5.
