Calderdale Council is asking independent organisations if they would be interested in taking over the running of its children’s centres.
Families who use the 21 sites across Calderdale have protested, most notably at Wellholme, Brighouse, over proposed cuts to subsidies for young people attending the centres.
However, this latest part of the consultation could lead to privatisation of the service.
The current contract runs until September 2013 and the council is seeking interest in taking over the running of the centres from October 2013.
A document accompanying the consultation says: “We think that commissioning services could let independent organisations provide better value for money, with more freedom to be creative and do things differently.”
It also says it is a chance for local organisations to “show what they can do”.
The consultation on subsidies and commissioning closes on February 15. Go to calderdale.gov.uk for more.
