Clitheroe v FC Halifax Town: Shaymen have to halt their slide at Clitheroe
TWO successive league defeats have put a dent in Town's play-off ambitions. Three would be disastrous.
That is why Jim Vince's side have to get something from tonight's trip to Clitheroe - preferably a win.
Town have a four point lead over sixth-placed Ossett Albion, who have also played 33 games but are not in action tonight.
The last thing the Shaymen can afford to do is to give their West Yorkshire rivals any more encouragement in their pursuit of a top five finish.
The same applies to Bamber Bridge, who are level with Ossett, and Lancaster City, who are six points behind Town with two games in hand - and those teams meet at the Shay this weekend.
Ossett apart, there is an almost full programme of matches for the promotion contenders this evening with Newcastle Blue Star going to Chorley, Skelmersdale at Radcliffe, Durham at Wakefield, Colwyn Bay at Bamber Bridge and Lancaster entertaining Garforth.
But the Shaymen's main concern must be their own performance as they look to try to arrest a run that has seen them take six of the last 21 points on offer.
But their fate is still in their own hands with games against three of the teams pursuing them still to play.
How much of an obstacle Clitheroe will provide remains to be seen.
Their recent form has been as erratic as Halifax's - and this from a team that came to the Shay back in October as one of the early frontrunners.
They had won seven league games in a row after an opening day defeat but were sent packing 4-0 with Colin Daniel bagging a hat-trick before Ashley Stott completed the scoring late on.
In recent weeks the Lancashire outfit have been up and down, with Skelmersdale and Woodley Sports winning at Shawbridge.
Clitheroe have managed to beat Curzon Ashton and Ossett Albion on home soil and were victorious at Chorley. But their Lancashire derby at the weekend offered little encouragement for them as they were held to a 2-2 draw at second from bottom Rossendale.
It's a great chance for Town to halt their slide - let's hope they take it.
Yesterday's match report from Town's defeat at Newcastle Blue Star said the score was 3-1 when it was in fact 3-0. We apologise for this error.
