Charity of the year - sponsored by Riley & Co

The Charity of the Year award celebrates a charity that has consistently delivered an outstanding service, raised its profile and demonstrated excellence all round.

Our winner, SmartMove, is a charity which assists homeless and vulnerably housed people to find accomodation in Calderdale.

Established in 1998, SmartMove has worked to help those most vulnerable in society.

The charity has a proven track record of finding private rented and social housing accommodation and supporting local disadvantaged people through difficult times.

One person who benefited from the work of SmartMove commented: “Whilst SmartMove is primarily focused on securing appropriate housing for local people in the rented sector and they do this in an exemplary manner, their success in this field does not just happen by chance.

“In the true sense of the word partnership, they fully demonstrate what it means in all their interventions.”

“Their success is based upon actively listening to the needs of their clients and using their thorough local knowledge and contacts to achieve positive results for all parties.”

After picking up the award, Stuart Rumney, chief executive of SmartMove, said: “We are absolutely over the moon.

“It’s great that we could bring volunteers here so everyone could see what we do.”

Also nominated in this category were Calderdale Citizens Advice Bureau, Calderdale Help In Bereavement Service and Home-Start.
