A young navy recruit has completed his basic training and stood alongside his father and uncle as a sailor for the first time.

Trainee Air Engineer Technician Connor Steele arrived at the gates of HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy training base in Cornwall, in January, treading the same path as his father, Lieutenant Jason Steele and his uncle, Leading Physical Trainer Luke Steele. Connor’s mother, Vanessa Lewis, is also a former sailor.

Connor, 22, from Boothtown and a former pupil of Hipperholme and Lightcliffe School, said: “I joined the Royal Navy to follow in my family’s footsteps.

“I’ve enjoyed the whole course and it’s been probably one of the best 10 weeks of my life so far.

“Standing alongside my dad and uncle in uniform at my passing-out-parade was a really proud moment and made me realise just how much I’ve achieved.”
