HALIFAX was the starting point for a 80 mile charity cycle challenge by a councillor.

Brigg town councillor Andrew Markham pedalled from the Piece Hall back to his home town in Lincolnshire to raise money for The Alzheimer’s Society.

He was supported by wife Jennifer Markham, whose family are from Boothtown, brother-in-law Phil Watson and Rachel Exley from the Alzheimer’s Society in Halifax.

He took on the challenge following the recent death of his mother-in-law, who suffered from Alzheimer’s.

His father-in-law also has the disease.

Coun Markham said: “It’s just giving something back knowing what they have been through with having to care for their parents and knowing that they have all shared the burden.

“I want to raise awareness of what the disease is,” he added.

He hopes to raise around £2,000 from the event. He said: “I can’t believe everyone’s generosity. We had a fantastic response.”
