The new Mayor of Calderdale was sworn in at a ceremony in Halifax Town Hall this afternoon.

Coun Ferman Ali (Lab, Park) took over the reigns from Coun Howard Blagbrough (Con, Brighouse).

Mr Ali will be joined by his wife Shaheen Ali and Coun Jane Scullion (Lab, Luddenden Foot) will become the Deputy Mayor with her husband Andrew Bibby as her consort.

The mayor’s role includes chairing meetings of the council, ceremonial duties and raising money for charity.

Coun Ali thanked his friends and family for their support and announced he had chosen St Augustines Centre, Halifax, as his chosen charity.

He said: “I am extremely proud to be the second asian Mayor of Calderdale and am looking forward to following in the footsteps of my predecessors in highlighting how great the borough of Calderdale is and how many people help to make it that way by giving their time to volunteer in so many different ways.

“I’m delighted that my wife Shaheen will be the Mayoress of Calderdale.”
