Golden couple Tony and Fran Senior are celebrating 50 years of marriage in style this week surrounded by friends and family on a Mediterranean cruise.

The couple, of Water Hill Lane, Friendly, booked a week-long cruise to mark their golden wedding anniversary on Saturday October 6 - and have been joined by their daughter, her husband and a gang of 10 friends to help them party.

The special holiday has been 18 months in the planning - and some of the guests have never flown or cruised before.

The group met up at The White Horse pub in Friendly on Friday morning before they set off to fly to Corfu from Leeds Bradford Airport’s VIP lounge - all wearing personalised ‘Gold Crew’ T-shirts . The Seniors’ T-shirts read “Tony and Fran going for gold 6.10.12”.

Fran, 68, said: “Tony and I booked it for our anniversary and then our friends said ‘That’s a good idea, do you mind if we come?’. They just wanted to join the party. We thought the more the merrier! Everyone’s been so excited.” This will be the Seniors’ sixth cruise and will take in Koper in Slovenia, Venice in Italy, Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia and Kotor in Montenegro before returning to Corfu. The day of Tony, 69, and Fran’s golden wedding was due to be the same day as the captain’s cocktail party so and Fran had packed a sepcial gold dress for the occasion. Her female pals were planning to wear black dresses with gold accessories and the men had black dinner suits with gold bow ties and cummerbunds.

The couple met at Cragg Vale Youth Club in 1959 and married at St John’s in the Wilderness Church. They have two daughters, five grandchildren and one great grandson. Fran - who was Mytholmroyd Gala Queen of 1961 - said the secret of their long marriage is respect and humour. “We respect each other and have a really good sense of humour.”

They will also be throwing another party on their return at the Hill Crest Bowling Club.
