Cricket - County cup win
HIPPERHOLME & Lightcliffe Year 8s beat Heckmondwike by eight wickets in the second round of the Yorkshire Cup.
Heckmondwike batted first and despite three wickets from Sam Henderson and two from skipper Kieron Rodger, they compiled a useful 114, opener Feather batting through for 43 not out.
The reply got off to a disappointing start as both Elliott Richardson and Harry Sutcliffe went cheaply but with the opening bowlers seen off Jordan Byrnes joined Rodger in an unbroken stand nearing 100.
Rodger hit three sixes during his lengthy innings, Byrnes hit three in a row during his 40 not out and it was the home captain that finished the game, going past 50 in the process.
The team had played a friendly at Brooksbank in preparation for the cup clash and they they warmed up in fine style by clinching a 16-run win.
Batting first, progress was slow against some accurate bowling.
Openers Richardson and Rodger moved the score to 26 before Rodger departed for 10.
Richardson anchored the innings with 17 as they closed in an average looking score of 59 off 20 overs.
When Brooksbank went into bat, the opening six overs went for only six runs, Byrnes and Henderson both bowling well and picking up a wicket apiece.
Griffiths picked up two wickets including that of opener Gasking, who batted the majority of the innings for 16. The home side eventually fell short finishing at 42 for five.
Hipperholme & Lightcliffe under 15s suffered an 18-run home defeat at the hands of Bradford GS in their County Cup clash
The visitors batted first and were restricted to 101 off 20 overs, some lusty blows towards the end of the innings pushing the score to three figures.
Hipperholme bowled well with the wickets shared between Talbot, Parkin, Lewis, Rodger and captain Fearon (2), keeper Litjens picked up two stumpings.
Hipperholme's innings started well with Cole and Fearon looking comfortable against some very tight bowling before Fearon unfortunately dragged a wide ball back onto his stumps.
Litjens joined Cole and while the scoreboard stuttered, the batters struggled to up the run rate.
Cole lost partners along the way as the chase became more frantic, Cole eventually departing for a hard fought 27.
Parkin and Atkins tried in vain to hit the required boundaries but it was too little too late as they finished 18 runs short.
