Cricket - Division Two: Waterworth proves main man

DENHOLME Cough had Ben Waterworth to thank for only their second victory in several seasons.

Waterworth plundered an unbeaten 70 against fellow strugglers Augustinians then followed up with six for 23 as the opposition were shot out for just 39 in response to 259.

Mark Clayton also took four for 16 in tandem with Waterworth to complete an overwhelming success

Luddenden Foot and Queensbury were involved in a tie with the visitors left kicking themselves for not pressing home their advantage.

Foot were given a decent start by Mark Wade (31) and an unbeaten 44 from Anthony Martin as the home side recovered from 83 for six.

A rapid 23 from number 10 batsman Stuart Helliwell saw the total climb to 174 for nine.

Queensbury slumped to nine for three before recovering to 143 for four.

However, three for 17 from John Hickey and four late wickets to Greg Osbourne (six for 69), put the game back in the melting pot and despite good knocks from Scott Griffiths (87) and Damien Weston (48), Queensbury were unable to find the winning score.

Bowlers were on top in Clayton's one wicket success over Stainland.

Stainland were restricted to 149 - Milan Opacic top-scoring with 31 - as Sam Wilson (four for 41), Steve Elphee (three for 56) and G. Singh (two for 19) hastened their downfall.

Clayton fared little better as Andrew Brown (five for 51) and Kevin Hutchinson (three for 40) kept them on their toes before they edged home with the final pair at the crease. Wilson (48) was best with the bat.

Outlane boosted their promotion hopes following a 34 run success over Wibsey Park Chapel.

Graham Hughes clubbed 63 for them and middle order support helped them reachi 230 for nine. Richard Winn (three for 50) and Stuart Fenton (three for 54) did their best to arrest the progress.

Mark Smirthwaite (65) proved equally adept in the reply, but A. Zulfiqar (four for 52) and Duncan Brundell (three for 49) spoiled their hopes.

And Andy Dimbleby rapped an unbeaten 76 as Shelf beat Old Town by a comfortable eight wickets.
