Cricket - Halifax League awards: Greetland's Matt on the record trail
WE'RE half way through the season and this summer's improved weather means there are some pretty impressive runs and wickets tallies in the Courier Sport/Briggs Priestley Engravers Awards competition for Halifax League first teamers.
Matthew Britton's batting statistics playing for Greetland in the middle section are undoubtedly the most impressive.
Last week's 204 against Oxenhope - his team still managed to lose - makes it look almost certain that he will not only win the Division One batting prize for June/July but also the seasonal award.
Britton scored an incredible 619 runs in four innings in June and now has 862 for the season. He should top last season's 1,017 scored in the section below and could threaten the highest totals ever in a Halifax League campaign.
Ex-Southowram player Fiaz Haider holds the record with 1,739 in Section B in 2003, having totalled 1,331 the year before. Graeme Williams' 1,132 for Old Town in Division Two in 1989 is third on the list.
Warley's Michael Midwood had knocks of 54, 96, 134 and 79 last month to lead the race for the June/July batting award in the top section while Sowerby's Martin Schofield, winner of the April/May bowling award, is now favourite to take the second award of the season in the section.
