Cricket: Hard work against favourites

Halifax League under 17s made the short trip to Gomersal to face one of the pre-tournament favourites, Heavy Woollen district. Halifax lost the toss and rival captain Chris Holliday elected to bat.

This proved to be the case as openers Rounding and Gorrod made quick progress and 50 was on the board before Josh Dimbleby bowled the latter. Skipper Holliday joined Rounding and took the total to 174, before Greg Keywood removed Holliday for 47.

Atkinson turned to spin, James Cooper reeling off 16overs taking 3 wickets, including Rounding's who made a century.

The Heavy Woollen's innings ended at 313 for 9. In reply the Halifax innings started positively, Atkinson and his opening partner Lewis Firth scoring at a brisk rate and a stand of 68 off 14 overs was achieved before Firth was out lbw. Atkinson followed in the next over. Arkam Asif and Ashton Richardson added 64 before Asif was out trying to clear the inner fielders for 23. Richardson went on, but just as he was looking towards a half century he was stumped for 42.

From there only Dimbleby with 23, Duckitt 15 and Alex Rowles 28 not out made double figures, and Halifax ended their innings on 220 all out from 42 overs.
