Cricket - Huddersfield League: Barkisland may fight deduction
BARKISLAND may appeal against a decision by the league's executive to strip them of their points for the six-wicket win against Scholes last Sunday and award them to the Premier Division leaders.
League chiefs have ruled that Zimbabwean Test ace Tinashe Panyangara, who played his first game of the season for the club, was ineligible.
They upheld a complaint from Scholes and not only handed the match points to them but deducted Barkisland a further six points and fined them 20 for breaching the rules.
The decision has repercussions for second-placed Elland, who now trail Scholes by 12 points at the midway point of the campaign.
Barkisland skipper Paul Winrow was unavailable but club secretary Keith Colman said in a statement: "Although we have yet to be notified officially by the league, the club have been verbally informed that a complaint by Scholes CC has been upheld and the club sanctioned with a points deduction and fine.
"As the club do not believe they have been in breach of the rules, and an appeal may follow, naturally we would prefer to see the rationale of the league's decision before making any further comment."
Panyangara, who is an EU qualified player and helped lead Barkisland's attack last season when they won the Sykes Cup, has been playing in the Nottinghamshire Premier League for West Indian Cavaliers this year.
Although still registered at Barkisland, it is claimed that was effectively cancelled when he played for the Cavaliers.
Panyangara took one wicket for 23 off 11 overs and followed up with 25 not out as Barkisland overhauled Scholes' 214 for five last Sunday.
The decision spells more frustration for Winrow. Earlier in the campaign, newly-arrived professional Jitender Billa had to watch as Barkisland crashed out of the Sykes Cup at the hands of Golcar.
The Indian fast bowler arrived in midweek but because the cup game was unusually on a Saturday, it didn't give him chance to play the required one league game before being eligible to play in the first round. A Barkisland appeal to the league for special dispensation for Billa to play failed.
Meanwhile, Winrow is likely to sit out tomorrow's trip to third-placed Skelmanthorpe due to a groin injury. The skipper hit his second century of the season against Scholes.
