Cricket - Huddersfield League: Dave's ton key to win
RELEGATION at the end of the 2006 season is now just a distant memory for Barkisland.
Paul Winrow's boys regained their top flight status at the first attempt last term, and now they are making waves back in the Huddersfield League Premiership, their fine start continuing with an impressive win over visitors Micklehurst at sun baked Scammonden Road.
Star man for the home side was Dave Weston, who joined Barkisland from Scholes last season and whose experience has been invaluable as they find their feet at the higher level.
After Simon Wheelwright departed without troubling the scorers, Winrow and Weston put on 73 before the skipper fell to John Forrester.
But though wickets began to tumble at the other end, Weston kept going and had made 108 when he was eventually run out as Barkisland posted 217.
Overseas man Love Ablish and Matthew Steers then took centre stage, the Indian grabbing five wickets and Steers claiming three key victims as a dogged Micklehurst were eventually dismissed for 178.
Elland also kept up their promising early season form but were made to work hard for it on a slow wicket of uncertain bounce at Holmfirth.
Openers Ryan Robinson and Cameron Borgas dug in and put on 61 before the former Yorkshire batsman was caught behind for 38, having hit three sixes and one four.
Aussie Borgas's innings then gradually blossomed and included five sixes and five fours as he carried his bat for 90 and led Elland to what proved to be a winning total of 201 for six, Lee Baxter chipping in with the next highest score of 25.
Holmfirth's batsmen also found it hard going and depended heavily on Javed Iqbal, who scored 1,000 runs in their 2007 promotion year.
When he was fourth out, to a sharp catch by skipper Gary Jakeman off the leg spin of Greg Buckley, he had scored 53 of the 66 runs then on the board.
Home captain Carl Jump was the next highest scorer with 23 and four others reached double figures without being able to go on to greater heights, as Craig Fletcher (four for 31) and Buckley (five for 53) chipped away at the innings which ended 55 runs short of the target
ELLAND, who were given a walk-over in the first round of the Sykes Cup when opponents Lepton Highlanders could not raise a team for a revised date after rain washed out all fixtures, have been drawn away to promoted Clayton West in the second round.
Barkisland have been drawn away to Meltham.
Having beaten Armitage Bridge in the first round of the Paddock Shield, Elland seconds have been drawn at home to neighbours Rastrick in the next stage.
The matches are due to be played next Sunday, May 18.
