Cricket: Late agony for Silkstone

CHAMPIONS Mytholmroyd snatched a one-run home win over Triangle in the first of two mouth-watering clashes between the pair over the weekend.

It was a devastating outcome for the visitors' Christian Silkstone, who took his side to the brink of victory with a superb 80 on a pitch softened by last week's rain, only to be last man out attempting a winning hit.

Silkstone and the experienced Peter Madden had put on 21 for the final wicket as Triangle chased down the home side's total of 190.

They needed six to win off the final over bowled by four-wicket Paul Senior and when Silkstone hit the first delivery for four, former table toppers Triangle were on the brink of adding another 10 points to their tally.

However, Silkstone then hit the ball to mid-on where Robert Cole took a decent catch above his head to settle an exciting contest between sides who met again in the semi-finals of the Parish Cup at Triangle yesterday.

'Royd skipper Kristian Halstead said Silkstone had scored a century against them last year and was understandably "gutted" to get out at such a crucial moment on Saturday.

Halstead said it was a major boost to his side's hopes of retaining the title. "It was a big win for us and only our second 10-pointer of the season," he said.

A total of 190 had satisfied Halstead with Tom Earle, Zeb Mahmood, Shahid Rashid, Senior and Spencer Harris all chipping in to counter the threat of young paceman Kurtis Whippey (five for 78), who made the most of bowling towards the greener end of the track.

'Royd looked to be sitting pretty when Triangle reached 61 for four in reply with dangermen Carl Fletcher and Nathan Cavalier back in the pavilion but Silkstone so nearly tipped the scales the visitors' way.
