Cricket - Promising start to campaign
HIPPERHOLME & Lightcliffe High School Year 10s made an excellent start to their season and early form suggested they could well match their county cup semi final appearance last season.
An early season friendly against Crossley Heath saw Hipperholme & Lightcliffe emerge victorious by eight wickets
Captain Tom Denham shared the bowling out and was able to restrict the visitors to 76 off their 16 overs. Danny Cole again the pick of the bowlers taking 1-2 off his two overs, along with a further brace from Sam Gleeson, taking 2-2, missing out on a hat-trick by the width of the seam!
In response, Hipperholme & Lightcliffe made a breezy start with Marcus Kelly taking the initiative with a first ball four, ably supported by the increasingly promising Ben Grech, the pair piled on the runs with both falling on 18.
Gleeson then matched his bowling to bring the side home with 15 not out including a lusty first ball six over point.
Hipperholme & Lightcliffe's good form continued with a five wicket win over Whitcliffe Mount.
Denham again kept to his rotation policy and Whitcliffe amassed an imposing 109 off 16 overs. Danny Cole again in the wickets taking two for 21 off three overs.
Hipperholme & Lightcliffe got off to the worse start possible as Kelly and Sam Gleeson departed with just two runs on the board.
That soon became two for three when Tom Denham played back to the bowler without scoring.
Grech remained calm at the other end as Josh Norcliffe fell for four and Lloyd Moore followed after making five.
The match was now edging out of Hipperholme's reach with the score on 24 for five and only 48 balls left with 86 runs still needed
Grech was joined by Danny Cole and the pair soon began clawing some respectability back. However, with the run rate ever increasing the pair had to go on the attack.
With some exquisite driving, Grech found the gaps and well judged singles by Cole gradually saw the home side edging closer to their victory target.
When Grech passed his 50 only 18 remained off 18 deliveries and eight balls later Cole hit the winning runs, a six over square leg. Grech finished unbeaten on 65 with Cole 29 not out.
Their next challenge proved a game too far as they bowed out of the Yorkshire Cup at the third round stage following a 16-run defeat by defending champions Shelley College.
Losing the toss, the visitors elected to bat and with Mellor grabbing two early breakthroughs they were up against it at 10 for two.
All the Shelley players made solid scores. Opener Greaves proved to be the player in form, but an exquisite piece of wicket keeping by Ben Grech had him stumped for 26.
Shelley had though accumulated 120 runs from 20 overs. Danny Cole again the pick of the bowlers taking two for 12 while Alex Mellor and Calum Lewis offered good support, both taking two wickets.
Kelly and Grech set off in good form and built a solid opening partnership of 26 before Kelly was caught behind for 21.
Mellor again added impetus and rotated strike well with Grech, who fell for 12, clean bowled playing across the line. He was soon followed by Mellor who was also clean bowled for 17.
At 59 for five, the game was still finely poised and with Danny Cole coming to the crease, joining his brother Luke, the game was still in Hipperholme & Lightcliffe’s hands.
However, the pendulum firmly swung in favour of the defending champions when, following a mix up and confusion in calling, Danny Cole was run out for a fine 21 with the score on 94 for six and only two overs left.
They could only yield a further 10 runs, despite the best efforts of the batsmen.
