Cricket - 'Royd bid to limit damage

MYTHOLMROYD expect their interest in the 2008 Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy to be a shortlived but interesting affair this weekend.

The Towergate Halifax League champions are at home to Woodlands on Sunday (1.30) and are relishing the chance to take on opponents who have won the Bradford League title for the last three years and are bidding for a hat-trick in this competition.

While 'Royd won the league and Parish Cup last year, the amateurs recognise the scale of the task they face after a seeded draw.

Secretary Paul Watson said: "Woodlands reputedly have a playing budget of 80,000 so we are expecting the ball to be whizzing past our ears.

"It should be like the good old days when we had Yorkshire down at the club - Woodlands are a very competent outfit.

"We will do our best to uphold the reputation of the Halifax League but we don't expect for one minute to win. There is a world of difference between the sides."

With Steve Senior unavailable, Jack Earle has been drafted into Kristian Halstead's line-up.

While 'Royd have made a stuttering start to the season it has been business as usual for the Oakenshaw outfit who extended their unbeaten league run to 31 matches with a six-run success over Baildon last Saturday, opener Scott Richardson and big-hitting Sarfraz Ahmed each making 44.

The winners will be away to either Bradford Central League champions Hepworth/Idle or Central Yorkshire League winners Townville.

Huddersfield League champions Honley will host the final which has been provisionally arranged for Sunday, August 17.

MYTHOLMROYD: K.Halstead, Z.Mahmood, J.Lord, P.Senior, S.Rashid, G.Foster, T.Earle, J.Earle, J.Cowens, L.Barrett, R.Cole.

Umpires: G.Wright, R.Holmes.
