Cricket: Smith helps in surge to semis - Team boss gets among
TEAM boss Roger Smith drafted himself into the line-up and helped the Towergate Halifax League side overcome the Leeds and West Riding League at Garforth PC on Sunday.
Smith came in for Triangle clubmate Nathan Cavalier and took three for 31 to help dismiss the home side for 118, setting up a five-wicket win and earning a home date with South Yorkshire in the semi-finals of the Leeds Area Knockout Cup.
Visiting skipper Wayne Cotton won the toss and chose to bowl on damp wicket.
Tight opening bowling from Kurtis Whippey (Triangle) and early wicket taker Richard Laycock (Booth) made scoring difficult.
Carl Fletcher (Triangle) then took two for 15 in his eight overs and with Smith and talented youngster Laycock (four for 15) in good form, Leeds West Riding struggled to post a competitive total.
Warley opener Nolan Bottomley set off like a train, smashing 28 of the first 29 runs before holing out in the fifth over.
A typical hard hit 23 from Fletcher continued the onslaught, and despite a mini collapse Andrew Pinfield (Jer Lane) steadied the innings with 27 before Laycock and Steve Beck (Bradshaw) finished the game off with almost 15 of the 40 overs to spare.
