Cricket: Stones claim Copley crown

STONES emerged victorious at the second annual Copley under nine cricket festival.

Another hugely successful event saw Copley, Blackley, Barkisland and Stones play each other once on a round robin format, with Barkisland winning all their their games.

They then played Stones, who had won two of their group games, in the final.

Copley and Blackley played for third place, with Copley emerging victorious over a valiant Blackley side.

The final proved to be an excellent game, with the result being decided off the last ball of the game.

Barkisland batted first and scored a very competitive 250 for four off eight overs. Stones benefited from bowling only five wides and taking a fine catch off the last ball of Barkisland's innings which was to prove crucial.

Stones got off to a good start in reply, but two excellent catches in the penultimate over seemed to have swung the game decisively Barkisland's way.

Needing 15 to win off the last over, Stones scored two singles, and a six off the first three balls. A dot ball was followed by a four, leaving Stones needing three runs to win off the last ball.

A glorious straight drive for four gave Stones the victory leaving Barkisland with the consolation of having contributed to a fine game.

BARKISLAND retained their Kwik Cricket crown after winning a tournament run by the Brooksbank School Partrnership and staged at Barkisland Cricket Club.

The team will now go on to represent Ryburn Valley in the Calderdale finals.

The competition involved teams from Barkisland, Ripponden, Triangle and Sacred Heart Primary Schools.

The weather stayed fine and after a hard afternoon of cricket the final was a repeat of the 2008 contest between Barkisland and Ripponden with Barkisland coming out on top.
