Cricket - Taverners team off to a winning start
HALIFAX Taverners under 11s made a winning start to their 2009 campaign after reaching the final of the competition in 2008. Halifax travelled to Hull and recorded a win against a very useful East Yorkshire side.
Halifax batting first scored 142 for six from their 30 overs with openers Luke Bridges (31) and Toby Thorpe (29) leading the way.
In a tight game, a good all round bowling and fielding performance saw the opposition restricted to 137 for five with Luke Bridges the pick of the bowlers recording three for 10 from his six overs.
Halifax then hosted Sheffield at Outlane. The visitors batted first and posted an impressive 184 for six, spinner Thomas Hosker picking up three for 17 from his five overs.
Halifax produced an excellent run chase with captain Bridges again to the fore with a beautifully crafted innings of 84 as well as featuring in a match winning partnership of 71 with his twin brother Matt (27).
Halifax cruised to victory in the penultimate over for the loss of five wickets helped by a useful contribution of 20 not out from Thomas Hosker.
Halifax face the North Yorkshire League at Copley C.C on Sunday (2pm).
