Cricket: Tod pin semi-final hopes on seamers

TODMORDEN'S bowlers are likely to be the key as they bid to reach the Worsley Cup final for the second season in a row.

Having already disposed of holders and defending champions Accrington in the first round and Enfield by one run, Jon Henderson's side go into the semi-final at Haslingden on Sunday with high hopes.

A close match is in prospect with Haslingden second in the Lancashire League and Todmorden third.

Tod's success this season has been built around a varied seam attack and the strength in depth is vital in a competition where bowlers are restricted to 10 overs each.

Stevie Barker, Mo Bux, James Morgan and professional Chinthaka Jayasinghe are all in double figures for wickets this season and Henderson can also call on himself and Andrew Sutcliffe along with Simon Newbitt to make up the fifth bowler.

However, ex-Halifax League left hander Newbitt is likely to have more of an influence with the bat.

He passed the 400 run mark for the season last weekend and, along with Nick Barker, has been the mainstay all season.

Haslingden have former Lancashire Under 19s player Phil Hayes, a left handed early order batsman and occasional bowler, as their professional.

The pair don't meet in the league until very late in the season with Haslingden coming to Centre Vale Park on Saturday, August 29 with the return at Bentgate on Sunday, September 13.

Church play Ramsbottom in the other semi final.
